Creative Law Shop® Customer Highlights: John Bunn

Successful wedding photographer and videographer John Bunn offers advice on how to build your business from humble beginnings.

This week’s customer highlight features my good friend (and officemate) John Bunn of Redeemed Productions and How to Film Weddings. I see John working hard every day, determined to ensure the success of his own business, while also sharing his wisdom and experience with others.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner—and John’s new wedding videography course launching this week—I thought it’d be the perfect time to feature John and his businesses that help capture couples’ most memorable and loving moments.

How long have you been in the industry/practicing your craft? I shot my first wedding in 2007! 600 weddings later, and we are still telling love stories around the globe!

How did you get started in the industry? I was asked by a friend to film their wedding. I fell in love with it, and was hooked!

What industry changes have you seen since you began? How have you adjusted to those changes along the way? So many changes! Technology alone has changed so much. We used to deliver on DVDs, now we deliver digitally. We do most of our meetings digitally now, too.

Are there any mistakes you made early on in your business that you learned from/ what taught you the biggest lesson when you began your business?  Not having the proper contracts in place! And not having a professional help me with taxes.

“Take your time and slowly grow your business…humble beginnings are great.”

- John Bunn

What advice would you give to another entrepreneur in the creative industry? Take your time and slowly grow your business. Do things the right way. Avoid debt. Humble beginnings are great. Don’t get too fancy too quickly.

What was the biggest quantum leap you made in your business? I honestly haven’t taken many. Going from part-time to full-time was scary, but calculated. When it comes to running my business, I don’t like being too risky.
